Dinghy sailing overview
Organised dinghy sailing takes place on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings from Spring until the Autumn. Whilst we are always looking for experienced dinghy sailors to join our racing fleet, our prime focus is to get as many people out enjoying the sheltered waters of the bay. We run a number of fun development sailing days and sail aways through the season as we seek to get social sailors more involved.
As a club member, you are entitled to use of the club winches and can obviously take your own vessel out at other times to suit you. However, this is at your own risk and without the reassurance of fellow sailors and a patrol boat out on the water.
There is a WhatsApp Group for those who would like to sail on Thursdays or Sundays (or both) where you can get a view on the prevailing weather conditions and who is going to be sailing. Please contact Michael Taylor on 07811 444769 to be added to the group.
Sunday morning sailing
Whilst we still intend to run some racing on Sunday mornings, through the Summer months in 2023, we will be adopting a more relaxed approach in order to encourage more social sailors to get out on the water.
If you would like to sail but not race, just want to get out on the water for the fun of sailing, then come down on a Sunday morning. There will always be someone around to help and the patrol boat will be out. We also have a few club boats you can use (at a modest cost) if you don’t have your own. Meet at the clubhouse at 9.30am with a view to being back off the water by lunchtime.
Thursday evening sailing
Thursday Evening Racing runs from the middle of April until the middle of September. Please arrive at the clubhouse at 5.45pm to be on the water and ready to start racing at 6.30pm prompt. The bar will be open from 6pm to 9pm so after sailing you can debate the evening’s events on the terrace over a glass of something cold!
Monday Lugger sailing
Monday Lugger racing runs from the middle of May until early September. Boats are rigged on the beach from 5.30pm with a view to launching around 6pm (always exciting to watch!) with racing starting at 6.30pm. The bar is open from 6.30pm and the terrace is a great place to watch these iconic boats out in the bay. More information on the history of the Luggers can be found by following the Beer Luggers Club link.
Club clinics
Watch out for our Club Clinics – these will be short, informal sessions held in the clubhouse or on the beach to help you get the best from your sailing and your volunteering, e.g. Patrol Boat Familiarisation; Race Hut Officer Guidance; Dinghy Rigging; Launch and Recovery, including the correct and safe use of the winches; How to Safely enjoy Sailing outside of club organised racing times.
Development sailing and sail aways
Building on the success in recent years, we again plan to hold a series of sailing development days to encourage more of our club members and their families to get on the water – whether you’re an experienced sailor or a complete beginner.
It will be fun sailing for everyone, on a Saturday afternoon. We aim to have a variety of single handed and two-handed boats on the water for everyone to have a go under the guidance of some of our more experienced sailors. This will include a fun race later in the afternoon for all ability levels, with prizes on offer for the winners, best capsize etc. It is not designed to be formal sailing training, more an opportunity for club members to gain experience of basic sailing techniques. The bar will be open when we come off the water.
In the evening there will be a club social event for everyone, both sailors and non-sailors, with some delicious food from our caterers and drinks from the bar.
Pre-booking is essential. Booking information will be sent out in advance of each development day.
For 2023, we are also planning a couple of social sail away events. Scheduled for Saturdays in the Summer, we will sail to a neighbouring beach for refreshments before returning to Beer
